Why is net zero important?

Scientific evidence highlights the urgent need to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels to avert the most severe impacts of climate change and safeguard a habitable planet. At present, the Earth is already approximately 1.1°C warmer than the late 1800s, and greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise.

To achieve the goal set forth in the Paris Agreement and keep global warming within the 1.5°C limit, a reduction of 45% in emissions is required by 2030. Ultimately, we must aim for net zero emissions by 2050. These ambitious targets are crucial steps towards ensuring a sustainable and secure future for generations to come.

How can net zero be achieved?

Moving towards a net-zero world presents one of the most significant challenges humanity has encountered. It necessitates a complete overhaul of our production, consumption, and transportation systems. Currently, the energy sector accounts for about three-quarters of greenhouse gas emissions, making it crucial in mitigating the severe impacts of climate change.

To achieve this, a vital step is to replace polluting sources like coal, gas, and oil-fired power plants with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. This shift would lead to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, playing a pivotal role in our journey towards a sustainable and greener future.

How can we guarantee that commitments are translated into concrete actions?

The increase in net-zero commitments has led to the emergence of different criteria with varying levels of effectiveness. To establish more robust and transparent standards for net-zero emissions pledges by non-State entities like businesses, investors, cities, and regions, and to accelerate their execution, UN Secretary-General António Guterres created a High-Level Expert Group in March 2022. This group presented its recommendations during COP27 on 8th November 2022
